Artist Statement
I paint the moment when the sound made by a gong stops and silence begins.  It is in this moment that all things are possible.  I paint the pauses that occur before the decisions are made.  These are the little moments that alter our lives and shape our paths through time.
My art is about seeing intently.  I study the object I wish to paint. Intently looking.  I watch the colors change as they slide around objects from light to shadow.  It has taken me years, not only to master the technique of glazing but more importantly, to learn how to distinguish subtle color variations as the light shifts over a form.
I use the technique of glazing to layer colors across each other.  When the paint is applied in thin layers it allows the light to penetrate the upper levels to strike thick paint underneath.  Then the light reflects back out of the painting to strike the viewer's eye.  The viewer optically blends the colors making them an active participant.  This creates for each viewer a moment within the painting.
My theory of the Compliment of Opposites is based on a story.  A musician was talking to his student, "If you leave a string too lax, it won't play.  If you tighten it too tight, it will break."  I found truth in this and based my color theory on this philosophy.  I use complements taken almost to a neutral to create three-dimensional space regardless of the constraints of traditional academic color theory.
Many people compare my work to that of Edward Hopper.  However, my work is more inspired by the art of the 17th century painter Jan Vermeer.  It is his illumination of the common subject to capture a moment of transitory beauty that inspires me.  I use modern materials to free me from the constraints of traditional scale and pallet while remaining true to "The Light".  This synthesis has allowed me to create my own technique.  Inspiration and technique are the tools that I use in the creation of unique works of art.  I hope that my works inspire you as much as I have been inspired.
